"Kayak Building Course: Exploring your crafty side through a kayak building class"
Artist Boat & the Texas Seaport Museum present a Kayak Building Course scheduled for the last three weekends in February & the 1st weekend in March 2005 in Galveston at the Texas Seaport Museum at the water's edge next to the Elissa Tall Ship. The cost is $750 which includes all materials & instruction. At the end of the course you will have created your very own Queen Charlotte Standard, 17-foot Stitch & Glue Kayak designed by Pygmy Boats. This is a light (40 lb) solo kayak, stable, and simple in form.
The course is limited to four individuals or groups. A deposit of $250 is required upon registration. Contact Karla Klay for more information or to register at info@artistboat.org or (409) 770-0722.
The Queen Charlotte-Standard fits adults 5'5" to 6'2" who weight up to 220 lbs. With a 24" beam and 17' length, she has average initial stability, with excellent secondary stability. Depth at cockpit, 12". Weighting only 40 lbs. makes her LIGHT to cartop and carry to water's edge. Due to lots of buoyancy in the upswept bow and stern, she's a very dry kayak in heavy weather. A high volume touring boat, the QC-std will easily carry 120 lbs. or gear--enough for a 2 or 3 week trip. She also makes a great, light day-use boat as well.
