Matthew was born in North Carolina but has lived in the Houston-Galveston area most of his life. Growing up, his interest and passion for the outdoors were fostered by his parents, who encouraged him to learn as much as possible about the natural world he found so interesting, even though his mom wasn’t too pleased by his love of snakes.
He continued his education at Texas A&M Galveston, earning his bachelor’s degree in Ocean & Coastal Resources in 2003 and his masters of Marine Resource Management in 2013. Both of these programs helped to hone his skills as an ecologist and where his love of the upper Texas Coast Ecosystems really came to be.
Professionally, Matthew has over 12 years in park management and operations, 7 years of environmental education experience, and 2 years with a nonprofit. Throughout his career, his responsibilities have included environmental and outdoor education, conservation, habitat restoration, and administration and management. Matthew is also an Eagle Scout and a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional through the National Recreation and Parks Association.
He is very excited to bring his passion for habitat restoration, education, and management to the Artist Boat to help continue to share his passion for the wonders of Galveston’s ecosystems with the public.
When he’s not working he loves spending time with his wife, Sheena, and son, Sam. Much of their time involves baseball with Sam, but they also love traveling, spending time outdoors, or just relaxing when time allows.
